Perhaps Timothy Leary didn’t have strap-ons in mind when he famously uttered “Tune in, turn on and drop out” at the San Francisco Human Be-In in 1967, but the message is equally as applicable to the popular recreational sex toy as it is to life. With so much smug political banter decrying alternative lifestyles and practices as the downfall of civilization, it’s easy for us as a society to forget that the pursuit of pleasure isn’t something to be ashamed of.
Strap on dildos are the personification of embracing sexual alternatives. When Leary said, “Drop Out”, he was encouraging the discovery of one’s singularity, and singularity can lead to the understanding that what society deems acceptable may not always be what’s right for you. After all, the rules for great sex are that it only happen between mutually consenting adults and that it’s pleasurable. Outside of that, there are no rules.

It’s been a running moving gag in recent years and probably a real nightmare scenario for more than a few travelers. While going through the security checkpoint, the TSA agent pulls out your sex toy, or worse yet toys, for all the world to see. What could be more embarrassing?
Sex toys, and in particular the vibrator, have long been associated with women. Although men have long used sex toys (and probably inspired the creation of most), social acceptance of sex toys for men has long lagged behind that of women.
