Top Five Sex Myths Busted

busted logo 300x98 Top Five Sex Myths BustedIt’s been said that the U.S.’ success over the last 200 plus years is directly attributable to the protestant work ethic, but whether protestant, catholic or any other religion practiced by our country’s founders, no one can argue against the fact that our country is decidedly puritanical in nature. Our puritanical beginnings manifest themselves through our collective conscience, which is a big part of why we find it so hard to be open about sex.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with leaving some things up to the imagination, unless you consider what the imagination is capable of. Misinformation about sex runs rampant through today’s society, and a lack of sex education ensures that it will only continue. So without further ado, here are the top 5 sex myths laid out and investigated for your reading pleasure…

#1 She never fakes it

Oh yes she does, my friend. In fact, women only reach orgasm only 30% of the time. Many women are incapable of having a vaginal orgasm and require clitoral stimulation to make the clouds part. I know what you’re thinking…”Not my partner!”. Sorry to tell you, but yes, your partner too.

#2 He thinks about sex every seven seconds on average

Do the math. How this ridiculous notion became so popular is beyond comprehension. Civilization wouldn’t have been invented were this true.

#3 Everyone else is having more sex than me

According to the Kinsey Institute, 23% of non-married men and 32% of non-married women report having no sex within the last year. That’s almost 1/4th of all men and 1/3rd of all women. Sounds like you’re in pretty good company. The reality is that most people aren’t getting it as often as you think. Much of the misinformation surrounding how often people have sex was spread by a self reported Durex condom survey from 2001. What’s wrong with a “self reported” survey, you ask? I’m not suggesting people have a tendency to lie, but…who am I kidding, of course people have a tendency to lie.

#4 The average guy is between 5 and 7 inches

This is true, but also blatantly false. How can average be between two numbers with another number in between? 6 is between 5 and 7, which means 6 inches is the average. The reason it was reported by Masters and Johnson as “between 5 and 7” is that M&J understood the fragile nature of a man’s psyche when it comes to his penis. Saying “between 5 and 7” encompasses a lot more men that saying “6 inches”, which would place a lot of men where they truly are, below average. That’s the bad news for those under 6 inches. The good news is that 99.9% of the women you might meet really could care less.

#5 Masturbation is something to be embarrassed about

If so, 98% of men and 44% of women must be embarrassed, because that’s how many were reported to have masturbated in a Kinsey Institute study of college age undergraduates. It’s hard to be embarrassed about something when you’re in the majority.

As always, keep it safe, sane and consensual
