One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding romance is that it takes a level of production that would make Jerry Bruckheimer proud. The simple truth is that romance is a state of mind rather than a state of affairs.
Candlelit dinners and warm baths are wonderful but wholly impractical for working couples, especially those with children. So how can you be more romantic in everyday life without going to such lengths? Below are five steps to a more romantic relationship that your special someone will definitely take note of.
1: Every once in a while, do something special out of the blue.
Valentines Day is a great holiday, but being treated like it’s Valentines Day when it’s not is even better. What you do doesn’t have to be colossal in scale, but it should be romantic. Try bringing home a single rose, rubbing your partner’s back without being asked or simply calling him or her at work to remind them of how much you love them.
2: Nothing beats the written word.
The joy of hand written letters is lost to the internet age, but it shouldn’t be lost to your partner. Leave them a note from time to time expressing your feelings. Looking forward to tonight? Enjoyed last night? Let them know with a well placed note for them to find.
3: Think romantic and you’ll be more romantic.
You didn’t forget how to flirt, did you? While the opportunity might not seem like it comes along too often for two people who are so familiar, nothing could be further from the truth. The opportunities are still there as they always have been, only now your attitude has changed. Adjust it and you’ll soon see an attitude adjustment for the better on the part of your partner. Use your eyes, words and body language to engage your partner in a romantic way, especially when you’re both surrounded by the mundane.
4: Take care of yourself.
Remember when you went to great pains to make sure you looked your best for your partner? How you present yourself means a lot to the person who shares a bed with you, so don’t let your guard down or if you already have, put it back up. You don’t need a new wardrobe or a gym membership, but you do need to do the best with what you have at your disposal. Trust me, they’ll notice if you make the effort.
5: Talk about the impossible so you can make it possible together.
Number 5 trumps them all. Few people are as satisfied as they may appear to be on the outside. If you’re like most of us, you have desires, dreams and hopes of things to come. Share those feelings with your partner. I guarantee you they have desires, dreams and hopes as well. Whether it’s something like going overseas for an extended vacation or more complicated like starting a business, sharing this part of yourself will open you up to your partner in a way that pillow talk never will.
Good luck on your journey toward a more romantic relationship, and as always, be clean, safe, adult and mutually consenting.
